Every year, BioBus seeks college students with a passion for science and an interest in gaining science communication and outreach experience. Junior Scientists will receive training and mentorship by research scientists and science outreach experts. They will also gain teaching and leadership experience by serving as co-instructors in our summer programs. As part of their internship, Junior Scientist interns will visit research labs at leading institutions in NYC and network with research scientists. Junior Scientists will be paid $18/hour.

We are currently seeking Junior Scientist interns! The 2024 College Junior Scientist Internship will run June 17 – August 16, 2024, and opportunities for continued part time employment during the school year may exist.

Position 1 – Teaching and Research Junior Scientist

Internship participants will:

Assist BioBus scientists in teaching mobile and community lab programs
Mentor high school students in science research programs
Receive science communication, mentorship and pedagogy training
Generate curriculum or curriculum/support material to be used in BioBus programs

Requirements:

Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program
Demonstrated engagement with STEM (science major, STEM work-study, lab research, participation in community science)
Attend school in or live in New York City
Desire to develop leadership, mentorship and teaching skills
Have a genuine interest in scientific discovery and have an interest in working with younger students to cultivate their scientific curiosity
Experience working with younger children is a plus

Position 2 – Teaching and Development Junior Scientist

Internship participants will:

Undergo science communication and teaching training
Teach in BioBus summer programs and public events for classes and communities in Harlem, Washington Heights and the Bronx.
Work on an adaption of a research science journal article that makes the findings accessible to middle school-aged students.
Write and format student stories, while reflecting student voice, for inclusion in grants, mass emails, social media, the annual report, and more
Research and assess corporate and foundation grant and funding opportunities
Review BioBus’ most recent annual report to identify and execute needed updates in format, layout, and content, both written and photographic
Work collaboratively with the Development Manager to establish processes for maintaining up-to-date organizational data to be included in future reports

Requirements:

Interest in and commitment to BioBus mission
Interest in STEM, education, or nonprofit management
Knowledge of and comfort working within Google Suite
Ability to teach in person both in our lab space and at partner locations
Adobe InDesign, Canva, or other graphic design experience

When do I need to apply?

While the LifeSci NYC Portal remains open until March 31, BioBus will begin assessing applicants on March 15 and the application is rolling until we fill our positions.

Where does the internship take place?

Summer Jr. Scientists will either be based at 129th and Broadway in West Harlem or at Stanton and Norfolk on the Lower East Side.
